The light bulbs have ecological and economic advantages; continue to demonstrate that caring for nature benefits your pocket.

What are the light bulbs?

The light bulbs are a type of fluorescent lamp that can be used with Edison screw caps. Threads that are conventional bulbs, therefore, are fluorescent, such as lifetime, adapted to replace bulbs.

How light bulbs work

The light bulbs are actually fluorescent lamps known as usual, only have compacted to reduce its size and increase its potency. The light tube is not straight, but curved U-shaped coiled several times and thus most of the electrical energy used becomes light.

Ecological advantages of energy saving light bulbs

Some of the environmental benefits of such bulbs are:

  • A common light bulb converts 2.6% of the energy required to light. However, the low power uses 15% of the energy to light.
  • Saving lamps require only 50 to 80% less energy than conventional bulbs to produce the same amount of light. So a low energy lamp of 22 watts is equivalent to a standard 100-watt, representing a significant saving of energy expenditure.
  • An energy saving light bulb 18 watts, rather than a 75-watt incandescent, is 570 kWh (kilowatt hour) over life of the bulb, which ecologically decreases by more than 500 kg the emission of greenhouse gases the atmosphere as CO2.
  • Only by changing five conventional bulbs for five low-power 28 watts would represent a decrease of 340 kg less greenhouse gases.

Economic advantages of energy saving light bulbs

However, light bulbs not only have ecological advantages, they also have economic advantages:

  • Returning to the previous example, as simple as changing five light bulbs of 28 watts for five-saving gesture saves 60 dollars per year.
  • Also rescuing an earlier example, know that saving lamp 18W replaces a current of 75 watts, is 570 kwh of life, that money are less than 62 dollars per year in electricity costs.
  • The light bulbs have a life up to 10 times higher than the others have and cost only seven times, which make them cheaper first stay although it seems otherwise.
  • According to Greenpeace engineer: “With the light bulbs to LEDs can reduce the cost of light, between 40% and 90%, depending on the type of light bulbs we are replacing. If we replace the light bulbs “normal” (which do not cease to be fluorescent small, containing toxic gases) by type LEDS we can reduce 35-40% of the energy bill. If we substitute are incandescent or halogen, the savings can be between 75-90% of the energy bill.”

Disadvantages of light bulbs

However, light bulbs not only have advantages, they also have their disadvantages and environmental drawbacks such as:

  • Toxicity: The energy-saving bulbs contain between 2-5 mg of mercury in their composition. In case of breakage of one of these lamps, it is advisable to leave the room for 15 minutes.
  • Recycling: Due to the toxicity cannot be disposed of with household waste or the recycling of glass, but in the premises assigned to them.
  • On slow: The energy-saving lamps take a few seconds to reach its maximum luminescence. Which can be quite intrusive when you need light immediately?

New light bulbs are more efficient

We can see that there are different types of light bulbs: the newest are called LED (LED drivers) more efficient in energy consumption and cost savings.

Besides it is on it is fast and secondly its cousin and waste materials are more environment friendly because they contain no mercury or toxic gases, such as other energy-saving bulbs.
