How to Install RAM on your desktop PC Dell

Installing new RAM in your desktop PC Dell is one of the fastest ways to accelerate their performance. It may also be necessary if you intend to run Windows Vista on it.If your Dell desktop PC needs a RAM upgrade to install Windows Vista, or you just want to speed it up, you can save some money by doing it yourself.

Things You’ll Need

  • One or two sticks of RAM Compatible
  • Dell desktop
  • Star screwdriver
  • ESD bracelet for electrostatic discharge protection

Install RAM on your desktop Dell

  • Disconnect the power cord from the back of the computer; unless you are using the metal box as a source of ground (see tips below for more information on being grounded).
  • Open the box as shown in the computer manual.In most cases, you do not even need the manual to show you how. It is simply a matter of unscrewing one or two screws on the back or bottom of the unit and removes the cover.
  • Locate an empty RAM slot.
  • Press the securing clips at each end of the RAM slot.
  • Align the notched edge of the RAM module with the tab on the bottom of the RAM slot.RAM only be adjusted if properly align so you do not have to worry about installing upside down.
  • Press the module straight into the slot, applying firm but gentle pressure on both ends of the RAM module until it clicks into place.The securing clips snap into place.
  • Replace the cover and reconnect power cords and cables.
  • Turn on the computer.The system should automatically recognize the new memory.

No empty memory slot RAM?

  • If all memory banks are full, you may need to replace the RAM instead of just install more.In that case, see the following tips and warnings about the use of RAM paired.
  • Ground yourself before touching the memory modules.
  • Gently press apart the securing clips that hold the RAM modules in place.The module will pop slightly.
  • Lift the RAM module up out of the memory slot.
  • Follow the above procedure to install new RAM.

Tips & Warnings

If you do not have an ESD wrist strap, you can ground yourself by touching a metal part of the computer to discharge any static electricity before touching anything inside the computer. Leave the power cord plugged in, but the shutdown and keep one hand on a metal part of the computer at all times during work.
