Retouch our photographs can be an important fact if we do not clear our objectives and we are scrupulously organized when opening Photoshop and touch values. Today I propose a series of very important tips to retouch quickly and without complicate life.

Retouch images is more than just create layers crazy. It is working deeply on an image to achieve a perfect result. The ethical implications are another matter, and we will not stop them, but today the current touch – up leads us to respect much more than before the skin and the features of the model.

  1. The graphics tablet, essential

First and most important is to have a graphics tablet. It may seem silly and even I myself came to think that the mouse is not retouched so badly and it is possible to get interesting things taking a little longer. Big mistake!

The graphics tablet is one of the most useful and practical accessories that will buy you throughout your career as a photographer, to level 5 in 1 reflector that you always save your ass in all sessions. With a few keyboard shortcuts, we will be able to switch between all Photoshop tools and work with masks an infinitely faster than the mouse speed.

  1. How disclose in Lightroom?

Developers Batch Capture One as Lightroom or just provide control over the image and rough edit and generally, without adjusting for areas. Not bad if you want a general result for casual photos, but serious work must have very little revealed in the first step and more work in Photoshop, which is where we can play with masks and adjustment layers in detail?

My advice is to reveal as flat as possible, without contrasting too much or too coarse adjustments. We just need to adjust the exposure, some very strong dominant and immediately turn to Photoshop to make adjustments of contrast, color and final details.

  1. The workflow

“A place for everything and everything in its place.” We have to establish how we are going to work the image. We can start creating adjustment layers like crazy and go playing sliders until you find something that we like.

Typically, start with cleaning the picture with the timely correction or frequency separation. Then we can go on with the Dodge and Burn to pass color correction and final adjustments. We should always respect a series of steps to work with an order and guidelines because otherwise we could throw us four hours to retouch an image.

  1. Adjustment layers? Just two

Why create thousands of adjustment layers with different sliders to get the same? The curves and hue / saturation are the only two layers we need. They are the most potent and with which we can adjust the color and exposure of our photography. All other adjustment layers, must know that GUIs are curves in different blending modes and that certain adjustments are applied.

For color, yes, I use another as selective correction to play some specific tones but all Photoshop adjustment layers are the result of a calculation on curves.

  1. Exporting JPG

When finished working with a photograph, sometimes we forget some minor adjustments, as might be embedding ICC profile, quality or size. Theirs is that we keep both the PSD (or PSB) as the highest quality JPG or security if we save a certain size, it might be more practical to create an action to keep it in that specific size whenever we want.

If we work in Adobe RGB, it is normal also embed the Adobe RGB ICC but like many servers that information is deleted, it is more practical simply convert and save in sRGB.

  1. Before and after? No thanks

The golden rule when retouching your photos pronouncement is that never teach the before / after. As a professional, is the result that counts, not from which parts? If retouching is natural and without fanfare, it is well done though photograph of professional. Unnecessary controversy will make you lose time and therefore money, so not worth a minute of your time trying to justify a retouch.
