The email is for many a small curse at work, where to be aware of incoming messages involves constant interruptions. The management of this media is one of the most time consuming tasks rob professionals and users in general and to its popularity one wonders what would happen if the email were not used during the workday.
A group of researchers from the University of Colorado Boulder just wanted to check. Thirteen employees of the agency decided to abandon email for a week to assess the impact on their working hours and attention on their health.
While email use is almost an art
This is not the first of these studies is to evaluate the effect of e – mail in the workday. Recently a study of Future Work Center organism performing psychological evaluations environments work – confirmed data that had already been revealed.
For example, notifications that constantly arrive from clients used by employees in any enterprise mail are a “toxic source of stress” and that one of the clear steps that should follow those users is to disable email application (or notifications) despite “betraying” the culture that we have created in which we feel bad about not seem that we are always available to answer.
In fact the relevance of email at work is still amazing, and such a survey relatively recently revealed as American employees invest no less than 6.3 hours a day to manage your e-mail: 3.2 hours were for work email and 3.1 for personal messages. In that study it revealed how even this generation of “millennials” It is especially “addicted” to this type of task.

Other experiments in this area have shown that the constant attention paid email “increases stress without increasing efficiency. With regard to checking email, but could become more”.
Less stress and fewer distractions
All participants in the experiment were placed systems that measured their heart rate throughout the day and sensors that collected various information offices also placed. For example, the time invested in a task before being interrupted many times moved from side to side, or while keeping their attention on a single window on your work session on the computer or the frequency with which they changed task.
The result left the email was interesting: most employees, especially the directors-rose more frequently from their chairs to meet face – to – face issues not even on the phone with the rest of the team instead of using the email.
Also they are better focused on the tasks performed, which was expected since dispensed with one of the sources of common disruptions in the working day: the arrival of an email message makes one change of context quickly and almost “feel compelled “to answer it not seem that it is not working or you have no “team spirit”.
The oddest thing was that there was even a reduction in the level of stress, something that confused researchers as there could be other factors that affect the reduction. However, the impact of leaving the email side had a clear effect, and interviews with participants all made clear that they were happier and less anxious by not having to constantly use it.

Working without email (for a while) is possible
While it is clear that email is vital for certain types of communication, those involved in the experiment did not notice damage to their business by learning certain topics face to face with other team members or do it later.
Once the period ended without email, how those involved to a mailbox full of messages faced after that inactivity was also observed. Interestingly that interaction without email management made those messages out quickly and efficiently could answer as many messages in batch and have a clear answer in many others.
Among the most important findings was that brought one of the participants, indicating that some emails might not be as urgent as that is sent to see. An interesting experiment that may help us better understand how we work with a medium that remains vital for multiple scenarios.
